Gabriola Island, BC
"The area known as the Gulf Islands is a coastal region of British Columbia Canada that is renowned and cherished for its stunning physical beauty, significant biodiversity, gentle climate and unique scenic rural and marine character. The beauty, tranquillity and unique natural environment of these islands in the Strait of Georgia have given the area national recognition." (Islands Trust)

"Gabriola Island is home to about 4500 people, a couple of hundred horses, many, many dogs and cats lovingly cared for, deer, peacocks, wallabies and assorted other critters like river otters and raccoons. Wonderful birds (eagles and hummingbirds and everything in between). No bears or cougars. It is a very active and caring community and a glance at our weekly calendar of events only hints at what is going on. We have organizations of every stripe and a volunteer Ambulance Society and Volunteer Fire Department that would put some cities to shame.

"What don't we have? No hospital, no high school, (but an excellent K-7 elementary school and two pre-schools.) No stop lights and not a lot of water. We are careful with it. We are indeed a desert Gulf Island. No municipal government. Just a strange mixture of Islands Trust and the Nanaimo Regional District.

"Do we like it here? Absolutely. We get the best of laid-back country living with the convenience of Nanimo a short ferry ride away and a large city (Vancouver) a few minutes (by plane) or a few hours by ferry. Gabriola is a beautiful rural island enjoying a temperate climate, a strong sense of community, and a pastoral natural setting. Surrounded by the best cruising grounds that lure yachtsmen, kayakers and scuba divers from around the world, it offers an abundance of wildlife including reclusive killer whales, sea lions, seals, otters and bald eagles. Gabriola remains one of the places you can still pick and eat fresh oysters, mussels and clams.

Retail Shopping and Business Services are concentrated in three main commercial areas." (Gabriola Island Chamber of Commerce)

Off to School
We have an excellent K-7 elementary school with about 190 students and two pre-schools on the Island. The elementary school has active community participation. Along with day care facilities, there are many organized recreational and educational activities for children from toddlers to teens.

Highschool kids take the school bus and ferry to Nanaimo District Secondary School (NDSS), a school that provides a fabulous range of academic and extra curricular opportunities.

In addition to the traditional academic classes, students have access to a Learn-at-Home program as well as the Career Technical Centre whose main goal with is to help youth transition from secondary school to post-secondary training programs and/or the workplace by offering a range of technical courses to students as part of their Grade 8-12 curriculum.

The sports teams at NDSS range from rugby to badminton to football to basketball to you name it, with both an aquatic and an ice centre within a block. There is a chess club, drama club and an awarding winning jazz band, among others.

There are also three other school options: Aspengrove School, Nanaimo Christian School and The High School At Vancouver Island University.
