Dyan Dunsmoor Image

Dyan Dunsmoor-Farley

President

A member of the Foundation Board since 2021, Dyan is also active with the Gabriola Health and Wellbeing Collaborative, Sustainable Gabriola, and the Rural and Remote Division of Family Practice.

She has a 25-year career in the BC Public Service, holding senior management roles in the Ministries of Health, Child and Family Development, and Women’s Equality.

Her PhD research explores how citizens are mobilized to address critical community issues.

Dyan’s volunteer work focuses on strengthening community capacity and resilience to improve health outcomes, and she sees the Foundation as a critical partner in this effort.

Lu Lazzarotto 

Vice-President

Lu chairs the Foundation’s Recruitment and Retention Committee.  

She retired to Gabriola in 2019 after a career in government and media, including serving as a community coroner. She also served in various volunteer positions, including chairing the Prince George Public Library Board.

She‘s joined the Foundation Board because she supports a robust primary healthcare system with access for all. She believes recruiting physicians, other medical practitioners and staff is key to providing equitable health care for the Gabriola community.

Julie Stewart

Treasurer

Julie has been living on Gabriola since 1989. She’s an accounting technician and has worked for various CPA firms in Vancouver and Nanaimo since 1987.

Julie has been involved with a few not-for-profits on Gabriola and says she was thrilled when she was invited to join the Foundation Board.

She notes that health care is important to us all and having the opportunity to help the Foundation work with the Medical Clinic and not-for-profits to improve the overall health of our community is important to her.

Harvey Graham

Director

Harvey is a founding director of the Foundation. He retired to Gabriola in 2002, after a long career at a major Toronto accounting firm. He has been volunteering here ever since.

Dr. Jennifer Hewson

Director

Jennifer is a social gerontologist whose research and teaching focuses on age-friendly communities, aging in place, social participation, and social inclusion.

She has a PhD in Educational Studies (Adult, Continuing and Community Education) from UBC and is an Associate Professor working remotely with the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary. She has been on Gabriola since 2020 and is actively involved in the community.

Jennifer is committed to practising from an equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility lens and looks forward to sharing her leadership, teaching, and research skills with the Foundation. 

Jeff Turkington

Jeff Turkington

Director

In 2025, Jeff moved to Gabriola Island and joined the Foundation in 2026.

He brings a wealth of experience in management consulting and project management within the health care sector, where he spent most of his career leading the design and implementation of clinical technology solutions.

Jeff’s professional focus has always been on bridging the gap between technology and people. His ability to translate technical concepts into practical solutions for clinical and administrative teams has been a defining strength throughout his career.

Jeff values Gabriola’s strong sense of community and looks forward to giving back. 

Adrian Huang

Dr. Adrian Huang

Director

Adrian is an orthopaedic surgeon and Clinical Associate Professor at UBC, and practises at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver.

He’s actively involved in health-system leadership, education, and governance.

Adrian also brings experience in health communication and social media, with a focus on translating complex medical and system-level issues into clear, accessible information for both professionals and the public. His work spans collaboration with academic institutions, professional organizations, and industry partners, giving him a practical understanding of how clinical care, innovation, and policy intersect.

Adrian is committed to contributing a thoughtful, evidence-informed perspective to help Gabriola’s health and well–being into the future. 

Sam Shaw

Sam Shaw

Director

Sam is the owner and CEO of Allwest Furnishings Ltd., which has served Edmonton and Northern Alberta for more than five decades.

His business interests also include FourPoint Bridge Services Ltd. and WislPort Inc., a governance consulting firm specializing in whistleblowing, conflict of interest, and organizational behaviour. Sam has held senior executive roles in post-secondary institutions across Canada and internationally, as well as in industry, including Ovintiv.

He holds numerous academic and professional credentials, publishes and presents globally, is the recipient of several leadership awards, supports community initiatives, and serves on several charitable, educational, and Indigenous boards.

The Gabriola Health Care Foundation (GHCF) owns and manages the Gabriola Community Health Centre. GHCF identifies the health care needs of residents and visitors, provides medical facilities and/or equipment, promotes primary health care objectives, and grants funds to qualified recipients.
