The Gabriola Community Health Centre is owned, operated and maintained by the Gabriola Health Care Foundation. Funded by community donations and government funding, the Community Health Centre was built with volunteer labour and is the physical heart of primary care services on Gabriola Island.
The vision of Gabriola Community Health Centre and making the centre a reality was truly a remarkable community effort on every level.
The overall cost of the project was $3.5 million (including a calculation for volunteer labour), and was paid for without increasing the island tax base. Gabriola residents contributed almost $1.7 million in cash, in-kind donations, and volunteer labour with government support providing an additional 6% of the necessary funds.
An incredible number of islanders worked countless hours to see the realization of the Gabriola Community Health Centre. Take a moment to review the list and acknowledge their contribution to our community :
The building sits on 1.66 hectares (4.1 acres) of land that was valued at $470,000 on September 19, 2011, and transferred to the Foundation on December 1, 2011. Building commenced on June 4, 2011, and was completed on August 5, 2012. The land was donated by local resident Bob Rooks.
